Orofino, Idaho —Area agricultural producers can start preparing now for the 2006 Conservation Security Program (CSP) sign-up by gathering records, according to the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the program’s sponsoring agency. Producers must have production records and soil tests for their CSP application. Applicants also need to show reasonable proof of land control for the duration of the contract (five to ten years). The program offers monetary rewards to farmers and ranchers engaged in conservation practices. The 2005 sign-up saw $1.6 million awarded to Idaho County producers. The 2006 sign-up will include all producers with a majority of their operation in the Clearwater or the Lower North Fork of the Clearwater drainages. Producers in the Lower Bear-Malad Watershed will also be eligible. A potential sign-up is slated for late fall or early winter. Interested farmers and ranchers will need to be in compliance with Highly Erodible Land (HEL) and Wetlands Provisions, and Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) requirements. Producers are encouraged to check on these with their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) very soon. In addition, producers will want to gather the following materials before the sign-up begins:
NRCS will use this information to determine producer eligibility and tier level once the official CSP sign-up begins. For more information on CSP, visit http://www.id.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/csp/index.html.
