Conservation Security Program application sign-up

February 17, 2006,
Orofino, Idaho--Agricultural producers are encouraged to start now to apply for the new Conservation Security Program, a conservation program through the Natural Resource Conservation Service.

“We want to give each producer the needed time in our office to complete the application," said Bruce Hanson, district conservationist with the NRCS office in Orofino. "We can only do that if people come in prior to the last day of sign-up."

Applications are now being accepted and will be accepted through March 31.

The Conservation Security Program is a conservation program through the Natural Resource Conservation Service that rewards good stewardship. The program is open for application to all producers whose majority of acreage is in the Clearwater drainage. The program is open to farmers and ranchers with any size operation. The program's payments are based on conservation practices already implemented as well as enhancements producers are willing to complete over the course of the contract.

Producers need to have their records in order before coming in to sign up, Hanson said. Field maps, soil samples, rotation records, weed management and fertilizer records as well as other records for the last two years are needed to complete the application. Record books are available at the local NRCS office to assist in organizing information.

Producers should also have knowledge of what enhancements are available and which fit into his operation. Enhancement packets are available at the local NRCS office.

The 2005 sign-up saw $4 million awarded to Idaho farmers and ranchers with a quarter of that going to neighboring Idaho County.

The Clearwater watershed is one of two open for enrollment in 2006. The other is the Malad watershed in southern Idaho.

USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
