money available for conservation innovation grants

February 15, 2006, Boise, ID—The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Idaho is making $450,000 available in 2006 for Conservation Innovation Grants.

Conservation Innovation Grants provide money for projects to develop or demonstrate innovative technology that addresses critical natural resource concerns. Applicants may be state or local government agencies, Tribes, organizations or individuals.

The Request for Proposals begins now and closes on May 15.

“Conservation Innovation Grants offers interested individuals or organizations the opportunity to adopt promising new conservation technologies,” says Bob Bartholomew, NRCS assistant state conservationist for programs. “The projects we fund will benefit Idaho’s agricultural producers by providing more options for environmental enhancement and complying with regulatory pressures.”

Bartholomew says Idaho NRCS is particularly interested in innovative technologies to address noxious weed control in non-cropland areas, and odor issues associated with confined livestock operations.

The grants awarded will be up to $75,000 each and require a 50 percent non-federal match. Half of the match may be in-kind services while the remaining must be in cash. NRCS caps the amount of administrative fees that can be charged for the project.

“The purpose of the Conservation Innovation Grants is not research,” Bartholomew says. “The purpose is to apply new innovative technologies on the ground.”

Grantees may use the grant funds to encourage agricultural producers to try new technologies by providing incentive payments or cost share.

Application information and instructions are available on the NRCS Idaho website at http://www.id.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/cig/index.html.
