Idaho Bulletin 140-6-1

June 1, 2006

SUBJECT:  SPA - New NRCS Strategic Plan

TO:   All Employees, NRCS, Idaho

Purpose.
To transmit copies of the new NRCS Strategic Plan.

Expiration Date.    September 30, 2006

Each office is receiving a copy of the new NRCS Strategic Plan, “Productive Lands—Healthy Environment.” Developed over a year’s time with input from NRCS employees from across the country, the plan outlines NRCS objectives for sustaining natural resources in the coming decades. The plan also provides measurable objectives associated with each goal and outcome.

The new Strategic Plan focuses on NRCS mission of “helping people help the land” using three over-arching strategies: cooperative conservation, a watershed approach and a market-based approach. The three foundation goals (traditional NRCS concerns) are outlined in the plan:

  • High quality, productive soils
  • Clean and abundant water
  • Healthy plant and animal communities

The plan identifies three venture goals (emerging resource issues) for NRCS to tackle in the future:

  • Air quality
  • Adequate energy supply
  • Preserving working farm and ranch lands

Please take the time to look over the new Strategic Plan. You may also access the strategic plan on my.NRCS. Our Idaho NRCS Business Plan is formulated from the same key initiatives. Both documents will guide our conservation work now and in the coming years.
